It was announced today by the Toronto Wolfpack Rugby Club that Sonny Bill Williams, the former centre and second-row for the All Blacks, will be joining their association. The Canadian-based rugby team is spending $10 Million on a two-year contract with Sonny Williams. Subsequently, he is now the highest-paid rugby player worldwide. Prior to joining the team, this star player was one of the leading members that brought countless victories for the All Blacks.
The Toronto Wolfpack is the first team operating in the English Rugby Super League without actually being located in the nation. Subsequently, this has now become an international series that will allow players like Sonny Williams to create contracts worldwide. The last day for Williams with the All Blacks was on Friday, November 1st. He is 34 Years Old and was a direct part of the All Blacks taking third in the championship.
Danny Weidler, a sports reporter with the Australian Sunday Times, spoke on this deal. He said: “The deal is incredible. It’s probably the most significant deal I’ve ever seen in the rugby league.”
New Home for Williams
Sonny Bill Williams returned to New Zealand on October 5th, 2019. He is expected to take a vacation with his family over the course of the next month. In the announcement, it was revealed that Williams himself had expressed a desire to join the new rugby association. This prompted Brian McDermott, the new head coach for the Toronto Wolfpack, to contract the star in hopes they could sign a deal.
Williams is considered an aged rugby player at 34 Years Old. He was originally expected to retire from the sport this year. However, after much deliberation with his associates, Sonny decided to remain in the league for another two years or more. Notable players that are retiring this year include Matt Todd, Ben Smith, Kieran Read and Ryan Crotty. All four of these stars received their final bronze medals before departing from the league. Rugby will now forever be changed.
These departing players were also contacted by the Toronto Wolfpack, in hopes that veteran rugby stars like Matt Todd and Ben Smith would also join the association. Regardless, the Canadian Outfit is still searching for new players that could award them a title victory in their first season in 2020. Now that the Rugby World Cup has finished, it’s anticipated that the Toronto Wolfpack will acquire multiple new players. However, the Canadian Association is currently happy with the acquirement of Sonny Bill Williams. He is their equivalent of David Beckham for the LA Galaxy in MLS. There’s a potential for nine other superstar names in the English Rugby Sports League that could make their way to the Wolfpack before the 2020 Season begins.
Going forward, the Toronto Wolfpack now has one of the highest-winning players in the series. Williams assisted the All Blacks to victory in 2011 and 2015 championships. He has been the Most Valuable Player in the league multiple times and gained the reputation to be a dominating force in Rugby. This will mark his third club as a professional rugby player.
