Canada Games Huge Success

Described as the sports moment for many athletes the 27th edition of the Canada Games was a massive success. Two weeks of cultural celebrations and sports excellence were wrapped up in one night. The Winter game in Alberta started on the 15th of February when more than 5,000 volunteers assisted in making the 27th Edition a considerable success for the over 3,600 participating athletes and the more than 20,000 spectators.

The Canada Games offered thousands of visitors the chance to enjoy ten nights or sports and cultural entertainment and this year the multi-sport event offered 19 different games. Canada was awarded the Games in 2014, and across two weeks central Alberta and Red Deer enjoyed and celebrated one of the most significant cultural and multi-sports events in Canada.

The government of Canada Congratulate Athletes

The federal minister of Sports and Science, Kirsty Duncan congratulated all this year’s athletes on behalf of Canadians and the Government of Canada. A special thanks also went out to all supporters, volunteers, officials and coaches.

Hosting the 2019 Canada Winter Games brought great joy to Alberta and the Minister of Tourism and Culture, Ricardo Miranda, congratulated the coaches and athletes on behalf of Alberta. Miranda also thanked the over 5,000 volunteers that worked around the clock to ensure the success of the event behind the scenes. Their exceptional teamwork and effort were admired as well as appreciated.

Mayor Tara Veer spoke on behalf of Red Deer City Council and thanked everyone parts of the community. Saying it was a privilege to host the 2019 Canada Winter Games and welcome the nation to Red Deer. Veer also reminded all that it was the maple leaf that had is unwavering and can bring the entire country together.

Chair of the Canada Games Council, Evan Johnston thanked and congratulated the volunteers on a job well done. They are acknowledging all the athletes for both their sportsmanship and their commitment to excellence. Johnston noted that it was because of critical partnerships, teamwork and everyone’s responsibility.

The hard work that the game in Red Deer will now leave a lasting legacy of the enhanced social legacy projects. It will also leave lasting sports facilities and downtown revitalisation centres both the broader community of Alberta as well as the athletes for many years to come. The diamond sponsors of the event included Tim Hortons, Red Deer County, MN and Shaw, while Nova Chemicals was the platinum sponsor of the 2019 Canada Winter Games. The funding parties included Canada, The City of Red Deer, Jeux Du Canada Games and Alberta Sports Connection.

Sports at the Canada Winter Games included wheelchair basketball, table tennis, judo, speed skating, snowboard, gymnastics, hockey, figure skating, curling, freestyle skiing, boxing, cross country skiing, badminton, biathlon, archery, artistic swimming and alpine skiing. Top medal standings were a total of 146 to Quebec, 105 to Ontario and 100 to Alberta.
